This essay discusses the notion of American exceptionalism and the use of military power by the U.S. in expanding its territory. The notion of American exceptionalism is that the United States alone has the right, whether by divine sanction or moral obligation, to bring civilization, or democracy, or liberty to the rest of the world, by violence if necessary.

I first argued that the history of the United States ought to be seen as only one part of a broader history, not as the teleological preparation of a present and future perfection; as history, that is, and not as patriotic commemoration.
